Hi, I would like to get my Epson Perfection 3170 Photo scanner working on modern Linux, The drivers on the provided disk are only for Windows and Mac (go fig) and the Linux drivers from Epson are from 2011/2012 and seem to only be made for fedora or red hat systems on top of it (from 2012 that is), I got the tar package that was on the website too and tried compiling it. The second thing is the windows that open are quite small, but that's because I got a big screen now. If the drivers for Windows 8 are not available on the manufacturer’s website I would recommend you to download the Windows 7 drivers and install them in compatibility mode:

In photoshop, I reduce the Cyan and Magent by 10% and the Yellow by 5% and I find that my white is now white according to the info box (0C, 0M, 0Y, 0K). The resultant scan is pretty close to OK. 5 left of centre (-.5), Temperature leave as is, and Saturation. Using the indicators like a ruler, make these changes: Brightness - 1.5 to the left of centre (-1.5), Tint.
All 4 markers or indicators should be in the centre position. This brings up 4 individual measurements.

On Mac OS X, this is normally already installed by Software Update, so VueScan should just work. You need to install the Epson driver to use this scanner on Windows and macOS. I change "IMAGE CORRECTION" from None to Manual. Epson Scanner Drivers Epson Perfection 3170 VueScan is compatible with the Epson Perfection 3170 on Windows, macOS and Linux. After the source has been overview scanned, alter the scan parameters. However, there is a manual work around in Image Capture that will get you closer to the original scanned source. From an output point of view, VueScan is not much better but I object to having to pay for something that was free and working when I bought the scanner. Even tho' it installed a new Epson scan, it would not acknowledge my scanner. I have installed all of the available updates and new ICA scan update. After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion, I have the same problem now with my Perfection 3170.
